This series turned out exactly as how one would have expected. After winning the one day series against India in India, Australia were expected to thrash Pakistan in Pakistan’s adopted home (Dubai, Abu dhabi and sharjah) and the same has happened. After sealing the 5 match one day series inside 3 games, Cummins was rested again and Australia gave Kane richardson a go in the 4th one day. and he has done no good for his place in the world cup as he did not had a eye catching game which was needed to overcome the likes of Nathan coulter Nile, his counter part who had a very good game.
Maxwell made a well constructed 82 ball 98 before he was run out in the 49th over of Australian innings after Australia were put into bat by Imad wasim who was captaining the Pakistan side in the absence of Malik. Australia were struggling at one stage as they were 140 for the loss of 5 wickets but the match defining partnership between Carey and maxwell made Australia to cross over 250 mark and in the end they set Pakistan a target of 278 in their 50 overs.Alex carey played a timely knock of 67 ball 55 as he saw Australia through the entire 50 overs.
Pakistan had two debutants in their batting line up and one of them was Abid ali who replaced Imam ul haq and the other was Saad ali who was playing the place of Malik. Abid ali and Shan masood opened the innings for Pakistan. NCN bowled masood in the very first over and Haris sohail followed masood soon after. The victory for Australia looked evident, but Abid ali and rizwan had other ideas. Both Abid ali and Rizwan watched the ball like a hawk and played some eye catching shots as Abid ali reached to his first hundred on debut and Rizwan was supporting him at the other end. They both stritched a partnership of 140 runs before the partnership was broken by Zampa, as Abid Ali was caught by finch. By then, Pakistan required a mere 59 runs from 48 odd deliveries with 7 wickets in hand and who would have though Pakistan would choke in the end to give the game to Australia.
After the dismissal of Abid ali, the onus was on Rizwan to stay till the end and finish the game for Pakistan, he stayed till the end and even got to his hundred but he could not close out the game as Australia won the game by 6 runs.Pakistan needed 17 runs from the final over as stoinis was given the responsibility to close out the game, Yasir shah took a single of the first ball, rizwan then had 5 more deliveries to get to 16 runs and he got out the next ball and there ended the game.. Pakistan lost game even after two of their top 4 batsmen got to 100. This shows that they lack a quality finisher.
The fifth one day between them is at the same venue on 31st march.
This is only the 5th match of IPL 2019 and one would get the feeling of having enough of it. Yes, the veterans being in the spotlight right away with the likes of BHAJJI SHOW, YUVI SHOW , RAINA REACHING TO 5000 RUN MARK and some close finishes with DRE RUS doing what he does best and PANT TAKING OFF FROM WHERE HE LEFT IN THE LAST SEASON and ASHWIN’ GAME CHANGING SPELL and the all important MANKAD moment from ASHWIN. This IPL ,certainly is living up to its expectation and after having a glimpse of all the teams, it is safe to say that there is no clear favourites at this moment of time.
DELHI CAPITALS
The new look Delhi played the way we all were expecting it to play and the move to play INGRAM ahead of COLIN MUNRO proved to be a master stroke as they defeated MUMBAI in their own den comprehensively. Now a much bigger challenge awaits them as they host CSK in what could be a cracker of a game. Imagine DC beating two heavy weights , MI and CSK in back to back games at the start of the season, they will become the team to beat in this competition. Their bowling line up is thunderous with the likes of RABADA and BOULT with ISSHANT’s experience and kemo paul’ raw talent. This bowling line up needs a separate support staff for the opposition to work their way out if they have to play them well. The only concern DC seemed to have is that they lacked a quality spinner , with AXAR PATEL and RAHUL TEWATIA oppositions would definitely be targetting them to score the bulk of the runs . DC’ batting is rock solid and they seemed to have a clear cut plan with DHAWAN taking the anchor role and the rest playing some fearless shots around him. DC will like to have a fast and bouncy track in kotla with their bowling attack but the recently concluded one day series against Australia saw the pitch was two paced so it will be interesting to how the pitch plays today.
CHENNAI SUPER KINGS
CSK started their campaign with a win against RCB, and now they play against a much more stringer opponent both on the paper and based on form. CSK though won their first game they won’t be entirely in a happy state as the pitch was terrible and that match could have gone either way. Harbhajan bowled brilliantly against RCB, he broke RCB’s back by removing KOHLI,ABD and MOEEN in his four over spell. But that may not be the case against DC in KOTLA where the pitch might have some pace and bounce so it will be interesting to see how he bowls in KOTLA. Another important aspect was DHONI played with only 3 foreigners against RCB and it will be interesting to see how he selects his team for the match against DC. Another thing DHONI might be concerned about is their ground fielding which was below par in their match against RCB. Their batting looks settled with once again RAYADU playing a well constructed knock, DHONI would be less worried about their batting.All in all CSK’ bowling will be tested against a strong DC batting order.
Overall one can expect a mouth watering and intense game of circket from these two teams.
The first match of this edition is not the one that we would have probably expected. I am sure that nobody saw that coming and eventually the match turned out to be a one sided affair, but today there are two mouth watering contests on card and one can expect a much more interesting matches when compared to yesterday.
KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS
KKR suffered a late blow when one of their fast bowler ANRICH NORTJE got injured and ruled out for the entire tournament. Earlier they have lost MAVI and NAGEKOTTI. The only known INDIAN pacer they have in their ranks in PRASIDH KRISHNA who had a break through season last year and even went on to play for INDIA A under RAHUL DRAVID. SUNIL NARINE who missed the PSL due to injury is back and running and is ready to play for KKR. The Australian discarded batsmen CHRISS LYNN will be eager to prove himself and he will hope that he once again falls in selector’s radar.They have LOCKIE FERGUSON and HARRY GURNEY and they have to choose from either one of them and both of them are quality bowlers in their own way.Then there is DRE RUS who can be a game changer at any moment of the game both with the bat and ball. The Indian core for them is super strong with UTHAPPA,GILL,RANA and the Captain himself.Their spin trio KULDEEP,CHAWLA and NARINE is the one that has to be feared by the opposition. The only concern they have is that how much of a threat NARINE,UTHAPPA and LYNN can be at the top of the order as they did not had a great season coming into this IPL, but still they will back their experienced players to come good and start the season with a bang.
SUNRISERS HYDERABAD
There is still no clarity that whether WILLIAMSON will play this game or not. Though SHAKIB has joined the team there is no news about his match fitness.Having said all these concerns ,these all will be blown away as the POCKET DYNAMITE DAVID WARNER takes the field for them.They have one of the most perfectly balanced side but yes, their balance will be destroyed once their foreign players return home at the end of April for world cup training camps but as of now they will be a team to beat. Though they may not have big INDIAN name in their ranks they have descent enough players who can play game changing innings with the likes of MANISH PANDEY, YUSUF PATHAN and VIJAY SHANKAR. They have strong core of INDIAN fast bowlers with the likes of BHUVNESHWAR KUMAR, KAUL and KHALEEL. They have quality spinners and all rounders. All in all they will be a hard team to beat.
The Eden pitch naturally has some bounce for fast bowlers and also helps spinners big time which is the exact thing both teams will be hoping for as they have very good spinners in their arsenal.
Overall this match will be a very interesting one and all eyes will be on DAVID WARNER.
The five match one day series between Pakistan and Australia is starting today in Pakistan’s adopted home Sharjah. This series will be played within a span of 10days which will be a hectic one for the players especially for the Pakistanis who are coming after PSL, so PCB has decided to rest their key players including their captain SAFARAZ AHMED. Pakistan have named a young squad and have given chances to those who have performed well in PSL like HASNAIN, ABID ALI and also some discarded players like JUNAID KHAN, YASIR SHAH and UMAR AKMAL. Pakistan would want to test their bench strength in this series and against a team like Australia its a great chance for youngsters to prove themselves to book a spot in world cup squad
SHOAIB MALIK will be captaining the side for Pakistan in the absence of Sarfaraz and most probably SHAN MASOOD who had an impressive test series in south africa will be making his debut in this match.
As far as Australians are concerned they will be looking themselves like world beaters as they just won the one day series against India after being 2 down, and they will look to carry that form and momentum into this series as well. Not too many super overs are being played in T20 internationals now a days but one such instance happened between the South Africa and Sri lanka on a low slow two paced pitch in Cape Town. Sri Lanka were put into bat by South Africa after Faf won the toss in what could have been a decision that would have backfired easily as even the target of 134 was difficult as the pitch became even more difficult to play shots in the second innings while chasing.
Dale Steyn opened the bowling for South Africa and removed Dickwella in the very first over and there after Sri Lanka lost wickets in regular intervals as they could not build a big partnership and eventually they ended up at 134 leaving South Africa to chase a mediocre 135 runs for Victory. Kamindu Mendis played a descent knock of 41 from 29 balls for Sri Lanka. Andile Phehlukwayo grabbed 3 wickets for South Africa.
South Africa then began their chasing and they never really got going as the pitch became terrible for batting with the odd ball keeping low and turning square for spinners. Lasith Malinga and Dhananjaya de Silva set the tone with the ball for Sri Lanka as their opening spell never allowed South African openers to get off to a good start as Hendricks was run out and de Kock and du Plessis also perished without scoring much, then came the match defining partnership between Van der Dussen and Miller. This partnership was taking South Africa comfortably home but there came another twist in the tale as Miller was run out for 41 from 23 balls and Sri Lamka again kept the match alive. South Africa needed just 5 runs off the last over with J P DUMINY and STEYN at the crease, Isuru Udana was given the responsibility and he conceded only 4 runs to take the match into the super over.
South Africa batted first in the super over with Miller and Dussen opening the batting. Malinga who earlier finished with the figures of 2 for 11 in his 4 overs bowled the super over. Miller struck a four and six in the super over and in the end South Africa finished with 14 runs from the super over.
With 15 required from the super over for Sri Lanka, Thisara Perera and Avishka Fernando came to bat and Tahir bowled the over. He managed to give only 5 runs and South Africa eventually won the game in the super over.
It was a dramatic finish in the end and these matches could well be a warm up that is needed before the big IPL as one can expect matches like these in IPL more often than not.
All eyes probably will be on IPL but there is a small little 3 match T20 series which will be played between Srilanka and South Africa starting today in Capetown. If anyone asks about how the tour went for Srilanka to Srilankan fans,they would probably not in a position to say whether they are happy or sad. because they just created history by whitewashing South Africa in a 2 match test series from no where and they were expected to carry that form into the limited overs but they hardly seemed to inspire as they were whitewashed by South Africans in the 5 match one day series. Now they both will battle it out in a 3 match T20 series where South Africa have named two different squads for this T20 series, for the first game all their star players like FAF, de KOCK, MILLER, TAHIR will take field while for the remaining two T20s all the IPL bound players are given rest which means they will come directly ro participate in IPL and those two T20s will be captained by JP DUMINY, while the first match will be captained by FAF.
As far as SriLankans are concerned they once again going into the series with an in experienced side with Malinga captaining the side they probably will be hoping for their big players like Thisara Perera Dickwella and T20 specialist ISURU UDANA to come good so that they can give some sort of competition to their mighty opponent, bur after all its funny format as span of two or three overs can change the game to either side.
For cricket fans they can can use these matches to just warm up their mood before the all big IPL
The defending champions will be on a high after winning their third IPL trophy last year They lived up to their expectations in their comeback season and they played and defeated every team in a convincing manner. They bought players who are mostly in mid 30’s and their think tank was criticized largely because of this reason but they proved everybody wrong by winning the trophy. Though their team revolved around experienced players like DHONI RAYADU WATSON BRAVO it was the youngsters like Deepak chahar, Billings and Lungi Ngidi with whom Dhoni made the difference. Dhoni marshaled his troops brilliantly like never before and probably 2018 was the best year for Dhoni in terms of batting as well as with his captaincy skills. This season CSK looks even more settled with Watson in prime form after back to back big bash and PSL he is again set to play a major role in CSK’ campaign. Rayadu will again look to prove his mettle as he will be eager to book a spot in India’ world cup squad. The only noticeable buy for CSK in this auction is MOHIT SHARMA with which they look to cover their death bowling concerns. Last year they missed the services of SANTNER and KEDAR JADHAV but this season there are no injury concerns for them and they look good to retain their trophy.

The biggest talking point for them is the return of POCKET DYNAMITE DAVID WARNER at the top but another latest concern for them is availability of Kane williamson who injured his shoulder in the recently concluded Bangladesh series and David Warner will miss the first week of the IPL due to his national commitments so the biggest question mark will be who will capatin their side in the absence of two of their potential captains at the start of the touurnament if Kane williamson is not available. The another major concern is that still there is no clarity over SHAKIB”S fitness and BCB has told earlier that if SHAKIB is not 100% fit they would not give the NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE for shakib to participate in IPL

Dinesh Karthik like Dhoni played with a settled group of players throughout the entire season and handled them well especially with some injury prone players like LYNN and RUSSELL. The only problem for them in the last season was a back up all rounder to russell whom they did not have one but they have sorted out that issue this season by getting BRATHWAITE in thier ranks this season. They also bought ANRICH NORTJE south african quick who could crank it up at 150 km/h. HARRY GURNEY another noticeable buy who is a very experienced campaigner popular all around the world and played in the recently concluded BIG BASH for MELBOURNE RENEGADES and finished the season with championship and returned with brilliant figures throughout the league and bowled very well in the death overs. He is very well known for his back of the hand slower ones and accurate yorkers and sharp bumber.

They have bought OSHANE THOMAS from WestIndies who impressed everyone with his fast bowling and sheer pace.The only department which they would be concerned of is their spin bowling which does not have huge names in their ranks but still they have ISH SODHI ,SHREYAS GOPAL, KRISHNAPPA GOWTHAM with whom they can give the opponents a run for their money. He has been scoring heaps of runs in the internationals as well as for his domestic side. Another noticeable buy is the INDIAN DISCARDED MIDDLE ORDER VETERAN YUVRAJ SINGH who will be looking to prove his prowess for the one last time in his career. They bought LASITH MALINGA this season to add more experience to their bowling attack along with the likes of BUMRAH BEHENDORFF MILNE and McCLENAGHAN. They also have enough firepower in batting with the likes of de KOCK, ROHIT ,ISSHAN KISHAN ,SURYAKUMAR YADAV,POLLARD and EVIN LEWIS. The only concern they will have is the inexperienced spin attack they have with the likes of MARKANDE and RAHUL CHAHAR,Though MARKANDE started the last season with a bang he faded away during the fag end of the tournament so MI will be hoping him to come good along with the likes of KRUNAL PANDYA. BEHENDORFF will miss the first week of the IPL due to his national commitments.

This season they have bought POORAN, SAM CURRAN and MOISES HENRIQUES to bolster their middle order and late hitting duty because last season barring for RAHUL and gayle (to some extent) rest all batsmen did not perform upto the mark. The other noticeable buy this season is tall lanky fast bowler from South Africa HARDUS VIJOEN who was the highest wicket taker in the recently concluded T10 league. As far as spin department is concerned they have quality spinners like ASHWIN,MUJEEB and MURUGAN ASHWIN and a mystery spinner whom they have bought for huge bucks VARUN CHAKRAVARTHY and in the fast bowling department they have TYE ,SHAMI and ANKIT RAJPOOT. The only area of concern for them is the lack of hard hitting All rounders like Russell,CUTTING in their ranks.

Last season they had the opportunity to qualify for the playoffs if they had beaten the Rajasthan Royals in their final league game which did not happen. This time On paper they once again seem to be a strong batting side but on the bowling front they hardly seem to inspire. With UMESH and SIRAJ as their leading INDIAN bowlers they have NATHAN COULTER NILE and TIM SOUTHEE as their foreign recruits they will expect any of these bowlers to put their hands up and perform on any given day if they want to win the trophy. As far as spin bowling is concerned they have CHAHAL,WASHINGTON SUNDAR and MOEEN ALI which forms a descent spin bowling attack. On batting front they have the real fire power with the likes of VIRAT,ABD,SHIMRON HETMYER,MARCUS STOINIS and PARTHIV PATEL they have one of the best batting line ups in this competition. The noticeable buy this season is obviously HETMYER and another Indian Domestic all round talent SHIBVAM DUBE ,they would want to change their fortunes around this season. On paper they look very strong as always and with DHAWAN in their rank they will feel more confident this season around. They have a very very strong INDIAN CORE with the likes of PRITHVI SHAW,DHAWAN,SHREYAS IYER,RISHABH PANT and HANUMA VIHARI and with COLIN MUNRO and COLIN INGRAM their batting looks more than settled and can destroy any bowling line up in the world on the given day.
